Reading Is a Reward. A Summer Invitation

Now that summer’s here, let’s get one thing straight: reading is not something you have to do. It’s something you get to do.

During the school year, reading can sometimes feel like another assignment to check off. But in the summer, reading gets to be what it was always meant to be—fun, relaxing, and full of possibility.

Think of reading as an adventure you take without ever packing a bag. You can explore magical lands, solve mysteries, meet new characters, and travel through history—all from your favorite chair. When you open a book, you're not escaping real life, you're expanding it. You’re learning things without even trying. That’s pretty cool.

Every story you read builds something inside you. You learn new words (even if you don’t stop to look them up). You start to understand how other people think and feel. You gather facts and ideas that stick with you. That background knowledge—the stuff you’ve read, seen, and heard—helps you make sense of the world and become an even better thinker.

And here’s something else: stories make us feel. Whether it’s laughter, curiosity, excitement, or even a few tears, reading gives us a place to feel all those big emotions in a safe way. That’s one of the reasons people of all ages love books.

So this summer, don’t treat reading like a chore or a checklist. Make it part of your day like a favorite song or a walk outside. Grab a book you choose—any topic, any format. Read it outside, in a blanket fort, with a flashlight, or out loud to your dog. There are no rules, just pages waiting to be turned.

Reading is a reward for making it through a long, busy year. It’s a chance to enjoy stories just because you want to. And it just might be the best part of your summer.

Happy reading—you’ve earned it.
